Hi..this page is brought to you by CyberSherrie's Pets! She is a great owner, and has had just about every pet imaginable from dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, fish to reptiles. She's had a dog live to 17 years, and a cat still living at 20 years...so she takes excellent care of us and has some good advice and tips for taking care of your beloved pet..after all we're family too!
After you are done reading this page..go to the Fuzzy Tales page,
for heart warming stories and more advice on caring for your pets!
Poisoning can happen so easily..and it is quick thinking that will save the life of your pet...Do you know what to do? As with humans whether to keep the poison down try to diluted it or to attempt to get the animal to expel it's stomach contents, depends on whether the poison was "corrosive" or not. In other words..is it going to cause just as much or more damage, coming up and it did going down...? (yeh I know..gross!)
If it is something that can be safely regurgitated..for cats you would administer, a tablespoon of household strength (not beauty salon) hydrogen peroxide. Once you've given the poor cat the peroxide..this will sound..cruel..but you must hold the cat and jiggle them around a bit..so it begins to foam in the stomach and tada..the junk is all over your carpet. I had to do this to a cat that ate a poisonous spider..how can you tell a cat has been poisoned.. well..walking funny..inner eyelids half closed..drooling or foaming at the mouth is a telltale sign...if the cat doesn't respond..you may repeat the step one more time... what do cats like that is poisonous?...well spiders... eating mice that have consumed poison, automobile antifreeze...stuff like that...Kitty cat should still go to the Vet.. afterwards for a complete checkup...
some poisons like antifreeze..need to be regurgitated and then what's left needs to be neutralized...activated liquid charcoal is used in this case..it will absorb the left over poison..but Antifreeze works so quickly and will cause the kidneys to crystallize..thus causing permanent kidney damage. Mouse and rat poison causes internal bleeding..and even though the poison has been expelled hemorrhaging is still a very real concern...and Antifreeze smells and tastes sweet which is why it is a danger to all..both dogs, cats and even children..so please be careful using this product.
And of course cats love plants..get to know what house plants are poisonous please! The cats don't care..they just have this need to feed on greens.such as..azalea, wisteria, laurel, rhododendron, rhubarb leaves, poinsettia leaves, castor bean, mistletoe, lily of the valley, hemlock, locoweed, jasmine weed, arrow grass, cherry tree foliage, as well as peach tree and elderberry leaves..just to name a few are toxic to both dogs and cats.
A Big killer for Cats these days..are flea control products. Too many
cat and dog owners, assume that they can save money..and buy flea products for the dog and
use it on the cat too, NO WAY.. you will kill your cat. Some cats are even too sensitive
for even some of the cat flea products..please be very careful when using these!
Now for Dogs...same symptoms..foaming..staggering..whining..walking
hunched up..etc... for them use table salt.... use rounded teaspoon to the back of the
tongue..do not just dump it down their throat..they can choke..the salt will cause them to
foam..but they will shortly barf the contents on your feet..and thank you later...Dogs are
more likely to be intentional poisoned, because they are more leery as to What they are
about to eat, where cats..tend to eat anything first..and are mostly accidental..so if
your dog is poisoned..be very suspicious.
A unfortunately form of poison is worming medicine..it Can kill your
dog..after all it has to kill the worms.. if you suspect your dog has had too much
medicine than they can handle and begins to wobble about..give them some karo syrup or
molasses..or any form of sugar..but still get them to the vet! Boric Acid which is used
for an eye wash by humans is highly toxic to dogs. And toilets..please keep those lids
down! Toilet cleaner will definitely make them sick. Soap is a temptation for dogs..some
love to eat it.. you can still wash them with it.. just make sure they don't eat a whole
bar...and toads.. dogs love toads..be sure and rinse their mouth out very good after having
them expel the poison and get them to a vet.
These are some poisoning tips..and now what about those FLEAS?
Personally, I have had "close calls" with highly toxic flea medicine, powders
and sprays.. I don't like them.. not only must it get into the animal's skin and sometimes
blood system to work..which can cause liver and kidney damage let alone what else your dog
or cat can't tell you..like headaches..Plus the fact you pet you animal..it gets on your
hands..your children's hands.. on the furniture..now everyone has had contact with this
toxic substance..plus the expense and fleas these days..seem to be becoming more and more
immune to their effects. What does good ol' mother nature do? What do the animals in the
wild do? They drown them..once a week I soak my pets up to their neck in a soothing warm tub
of water.. just plain water..no harsh soaps that will dry their skin out..it is relaxing
for the animal..and drowns the fleas..after about 15 minutes..you will see the fleas begin
to float off. No chemicals..the natural and inexpensive way to deal with fleas. As they
scurry to the pets head..you can just pick them off..I want to be able to hug my dog or
cat without the worry of chemicals and to allow my pet to live a long full life..not have
it shortened by a few years because of toxins in their organs.
